2008 – 2016 · Peñarol & Uruguay Youth

Origins

Joined Peñarol academy aged 10 . Initially reluctant to run on big pitches coached out of it quickly.
Senior debut for Peñarol on 23 July 2015, one day after his 17th birthday. Mentored by idol Diego Forlán.
Won the 2016 Uruguayan Primera División & Apertura with Peñarol his first senior trophies.
Won the U-20 World Cup Silver Ball in 2017 , finishing as second-best player. Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea & Real Madrid all scouted him.

Phase 2

The Apprenticeship

2016 – 2019 · Castilla → Loan → First Team Entry

Formation

Transferred to Real Madrid July 2016 , assigned to reserve team Castilla. Scored first Castilla goal vs Albacete in December 2016.
Sent on loan to Deportivo La Coruña for 2017–18. Made 25 La Liga appearances crucial first-team experience in Spain.
Impressed Lopetegui in pre-season 2018. Made his official Real Madrid debut in the UCL group stage vs Viktoria Plzeň, aged 20.
Won the FIFA Club World Cup 2018 in his first season with the first team. 25 appearances total.

Phase 3

The Breakthrough & Rise

2019 – 2022 · Becoming Indispensable

Ascent

2019–20: True breakthrough under Zidane. Scored first RM goal vs Eibar. 33 appearances , La Liga title won.
Jan 2020 Supercopa Final: Sacrificial red card on Morata → forced penalty shootout → RM win. Named Man of the Match. Simeone: "the most important play of the game."
Oct 2020: Scored in El Clásico at Camp Nou. Only the 2nd Uruguayan ever to score in El Clásico after Luis Suárez.
UCL Final 2022 vs Liverpool: Provided the key assist for Vinícius' winning goal. Won La Liga + Champions League double.

Origins

2022–23: Netted 12 goals in all competitions, fulfilling Ancelotti's pre-season prediction of 10+. Copa del Rey won
Apr 2024: First-time volley vs Manchester City in UCL QF voted Real Madrid Goal of the Season. Second UCL won (2023–24).
Nov 2023: Extended contract until June 2029. Inherited the iconic #8 shirt after Toni Kroos' retirement.
2025–26: Named vice-captain. Scored a first-half hat-trick vs Manchester City in UCL R16 (Mar 2026), earning a standing ovation at the Bernabéu. 18 career titles and counting.
